Can You Sell Inside ChatGPT With WooCommerce? What Works in 2026

ChatGPT Instant Checkout came and went. Here is what a WooCommerce store can actually do in 2026 to be found and recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI assistants.

Not in the way most people mean it. As of September 2026, a WooCommerce store cannot take payment inside ChatGPT through any official, generally available route. What you can do is get your products shown in ChatGPT shopping results and send the buyer to your own WooCommerce checkout, which is also where OpenAI itself is now pointing merchants.

Below is what changed over the last 12 months, what is live today, what is still "coming soon", and a practical checklist for being found and recommended by AI assistants.

What happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout?

OpenAI launched Instant Checkout on 29 September 2025. US users could buy from US Etsy sellers without leaving the chat, with Shopify merchants announced as "coming soon". At the same time OpenAI open-sourced the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), built with Stripe.

Six months later the direction changed. On 24 March 2026 OpenAI said the initial version of Instant Checkout "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide" and moved to letting merchants use their own checkout. OpenAI now focuses on product discovery, and ACP is used so that "merchants share product feeds and promotions so their catalogs are fully represented in ChatGPT."

So if an agency or plugin vendor still promises you "Instant Checkout in ChatGPT", ask them to show it working on a live WooCommerce store. We have not seen one.

How does selling on ChatGPT work in 2026?

Today the flow looks like this:

  1. You apply as a merchant at chatgpt.com/merchants. The page says that if you have already applied, "you're on the waitlist".
  2. After approval, you submit a product feed. OpenAI's commerce docs describe "a secure, regularly refreshed feed (CSV or JSON) containing key details such as identifiers, descriptions, pricing, inventory, media, and fulfillment options."
  3. Your products can appear in ChatGPT shopping results. The merchants page states that "Customers complete their purchase on your site or app" and that shopping is currently live for ChatGPT users in the US.

For WooCommerce, the common way to build the feed is a feed plugin. WPBeginner's September 2026 tutorial uses the free Product Feed PRO plugin, whose changelog lists an OpenAI feed channel and JSONL.GZ and CSV.GZ output. We would treat the plugin as the easy part. The hard part is the data going into it.

One more thing to check: OpenAI's crawler for ChatGPT search is OAI-SearchBot, which is separate from GPTBot (used for model training). OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt if you want to appear in search results. Blocking GPTBot does not block search indexing, since "each setting is independent of the others."

What about Google Gemini and AI Mode?

Google has its own protocol, the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). It powers checkout in AI Mode in Search and Gemini, but access is narrow. Google's Merchant Center help page says it applies only to products eligible in the United States, Canada and Australia, and that the checkout experience is available to select merchants through an early access programme. At Google Marketing Live on 20 May 2026, Google said UCP checkout would roll out in Canada and Australia "in the coming months" and "later to the U.K." The EU was not mentioned.

For most WooCommerce stores the useful part of Google's side is older and simpler: a clean, complete Merchant Center feed. That feed already drives Shopping results and is the data Google's AI surfaces draw on.

What does WooCommerce itself offer?

WooCommerce's own agentic commerce page is honest about the status. MCP and the Abilities API are marked as live. Both UCP (Google) and ACP (Stripe) are marked "coming soon", with no dates.

The planned route to ACP is the official Stripe extension. WooCommerce announced in December 2025 that Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite "will be available to WooCommerce users through the official Stripe extension" and would roll out "in the coming months", with a waitlist. WooCommerce's guide to selling through AI (updated 3 September 2026) describes ACP as rolling out to US businesses and UCP as still being built.

Here is the status in one table:

ChannelIn-chat checkout for WooCommerce? What works today
ChatGPTNo. Instant Checkout discontinued in March 2026Merchant application, product feed, buyer clicks through to your store
Google AI Mode and GeminiSelect merchants only, US, Canada and AustraliaGoogle Merchant Center feed via Google for WooCommerce
Stripe Agentic Commerce SuiteAnnounced for WooCommerce via Stripe extension, waitlistInstall Stripe for WooCommerce, join the waitlist
Third-party UCP/ACP pluginsUnofficial, very earlyTest on staging only

Should you install an unofficial UCP or ACP plugin?

Some developers have published plugins that implement both protocols. For example, UCP/ACP Agent for WooCommerce on WordPress.org had fewer than 10 active installations when we checked. Implementing a protocol is not the same as being accepted by the AI platform. ChatGPT and Google both run their own merchant onboarding, and neither lists WooCommerce plugins as approved partners.

Our advice: do not put a plugin like this on a live checkout. If you want to learn how the protocols behave, try it on a staging copy of your store, with test payments, and read the code first. Payment and order creation are the most sensitive parts of your store.

What should a WooCommerce store do now?

The work that pays off is the same for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and classic search. AI assistants recommend products they can understand and trust. That comes down to catalogue data, policies and technical access.

Product data checklist

  • Every product has a clear title, a factual description, price with currency, brand, main image and stock status.
  • GTIN or MPN where one exists. The WPBeginner guide notes the OpenAI feed expects a unique identifier or an explicit "no identifier" flag.
  • Attributes are real WooCommerce attributes (size, material, compatibility), not only text inside the description.
  • Variations have their own SKU, price and stock.
  • Descriptions answer buyer questions: who is it for, what is included, dimensions, care, compatibility.
  • No duplicate or placeholder products left over from imports.

Policy and trust checklist

  • Shipping costs and delivery times are visible on product pages, not only at checkout. WooCommerce's own guide recommends this.
  • Returns policy is on a crawlable page and summarised on product pages.
  • Reviews are genuine and shown in product structured data where your theme supports it.
  • Contact details and company information are easy to find.

Technical checklist

  • Product structured data validates without errors.
  • robots.txt allows the search crawlers you want (OAI-SearchBot, Googlebot) and you have made a conscious choice about training crawlers such as GPTBot.
  • Stock and prices sync to feeds at least daily. WooCommerce recommends real-time inventory sync.
  • Google for WooCommerce is connected to Merchant Center and the feed has no disapproved products.
  • Stripe for WooCommerce is installed if you want the planned ACP route, and you have joined the waitlist.
  • Once a quarter, ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity about your top products and categories and note what they get wrong.

That last step is cheap and very revealing. In our projects we often see assistants quote an old price, miss a variation or describe a discontinued product, and the cause is nearly always the store's own data.

Is this worth doing if you sell mainly in the EU or UK?

ChatGPT shopping is currently live for US users, and UCP checkout is limited to the US, Canada and Australia, with the UK "later". If your customers are in Europe, the direct revenue from these programmes is small today.

The groundwork still pays off. Clean product data, visible policies and a healthy Merchant Center feed improve Google Shopping and classic search now, and they are the entry ticket for whichever AI programme reaches your market next. What we would not do is spend a large budget on protocol integrations that may change again. Instant Checkout lasted about six months.

A realistic plan and budget

  1. Audit your catalogue data (1-2 weeks). Export products, find missing identifiers, attributes, images and weak descriptions.
  2. Fix the data at the source in WooCommerce, not only in the feed plugin. Otherwise every new feed repeats the problems.
  3. Set up feeds: Google for WooCommerce to Merchant Center, and an OpenAI feed if you sell in the US and are accepted.
  4. Publish policies on product pages and check structured data.
  5. Monitor answers in AI assistants quarterly and after big catalogue changes.

For a store with a few hundred products, steps 3-5 are mostly configuration. Step 2 is where the time goes, and it scales with catalogue size and how messy past imports were. Our AI readiness audit, which covers catalogue data, feeds, policies, structured data and crawler access, starts from $1,500.

When to get help

If you want a clear view of how AI assistants see your catalogue and what to fix first, our agentic commerce service for WooCommerce covers the audit, feed setup and monitoring. If the wider store needs a health check first, start with a WooCommerce audit. We give a fixed scope and price before any work starts.
